Jimmy Carter press secretary Jody Powell dies of an apparent heart attack monday.

Jody Powell, who was White House press secretary and among the closest and most trusted advisers to President Jimmy Carter, died Monday of a heart attack. In this March 30, 1980, file photo, Powell speaks at a news conference in Milwaukee.

Jody Powell, a member of the so-called Georgia Mafia that descended on Washington after Carter was elected, died at his home near Cambridge on Maryland's eastern shore. He was 65. Chief of staff Hamilton Jordan (left), President Carter and Powell on Air Force One.

Powell, who first worked in Carter's gubernatorial campaign in Georgia, joined Carter's presidential campaign in 1976 and served as chief White House spokesman between 1977 and 1981.

After leaving the White House, Powell became one of the founders of the Powell Tate public relations firm in Washington.
