2010 Notable Deaths: August

Notable deaths for August 2010. Remembering Patricia Neal, Ted Stevens and Robert Wilson.

PATRICIA NEAL, Jan. 20, 1926-Aug. 8, 2010: Academy Award-winning actress - A Kentucky native who had strong family ties to Atlanta - is best know for her roles in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "Breakfast at Tiffany's," and "Hud," for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress in 1963.

TED STEVENS, Nov. 18, 1923-Aug. 9, 2010: Longest serving Republican senator in U.S. history. Stevens represented Alaska from 1968 until January 2009. In 2008, Stevens was found guilty of seven counts of failing to properly report gifts, which were later voided. The man famously regarded in Alaska as "Uncle Ted" died in a plane crash while en route to a private lodge in Alaska.

EDWIN NEWMAN, Jan. 25, 1919-Aug. 13, 2010: Longtime broadcaster and author was a regular contributor on NBC's The Today Show and Meet the Press. Newman covered some significant events in the 20th century, from the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II to the assassination of President John F. Kenney. His best-known books include "Strictly Speaking: Will America Be the Death of English?" and "A Civil Tongue" in which he said the English language was reflective of the story state of society.

ROBERT WILSON, 1957-Aug. 15, 2010: Noted bassist for the funk and R&B group the Gap Band, originally the Greenwood Archer Pine Street Band. The group's hits include "You Dropped A Bomb On Me," "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance (Oops)," "Party Train" and others. Known as the "Godfather of bass guitar," Wilson played bass with the likes of Eric Clapton and Billy Preston.

BOBBY THOMSON, Oct. 25, 1923-Aug. 16, 2010: A Scottish native who played for six teams - including the Milwaukee Braves - in a 14-year career in major league baseball. He was a three-time All-Star selection. His season-ending three-run homer that clinched the 1951 National League pennant - "the Shot Heard 'Round the World" - for the N.Y. Giants is one of the more famous moments in baseball history.

LYNN TURNER, July 13, 1968-Aug. 30, 2010 - Julia Lynn Turner, a former Cobb County 911 operator, was dubbed the "black widow" for killing her husband in 1995 and her boyfriend in 2001 by poisoning them with antifreeze for financial gain. She died - while serving two life sentences - at Metro State Prison of a likely suicide after ingesting 15 times the recommended dosage of her prescribed blood pressure medication.
