Photos: Historical images of the D-Day invasion
In June 1944, 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft brought and supported 160,000 Allied troops on a 50-mile stretch of French coastline, all in an attempt to bring the occupation of France by Nazi Germany to an end and transform World War II. By the end of June 6, the Allies had won Normandy. The victory came at a high price, more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded in the battle. But it was starting point for 100,000 more to begin their march across Europe to squash the Nazi regime.
