Carl Beck lied about his age so he could enlist in the Army when he was 17. About a year later, he was jumping out of an airplane over France on D-Day.

Beck went to spend 20 years in the Army, retiring in 1963 as a master sergeant. Here he is seen at his home in Atlanta on June 25, 2002 replacing his worn 49-star flag with a newer 50-star flag.

Beck often talks about his experience as a soldier. Here he and fellow WW II veteran Bob Jones, from Atlanta, share their war stories at the Atlanta History Center on May 27, 2007.

Carl Beck -- seen in this .May 15, 2014 photo -- was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. On D-Day his plane was diverted from the planned drop zone by anti-aircraft fire. After jumping from the plane Beck was 12 miles from his original drop zone in Normandy.

Beck, wearing a replica WWII jumpsuit, was part of the Army's 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, which parachuted into Normandy on D-Day on June 6, 1944.
