Bank robbery suspect killed in Lawrenceville

A Gwinnett Police officer shot and killed a suspected bank robber Monday morning after the suspect pistol whipped him during a struggle behind a nearby church, officials said. JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM

“The suspect apparently hit the officer over the head,” said Ritter. “The officer was then forced to shoot the suspect.” The injured officer was transported to the hospital and is expected to be OK, Ritter said. JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM

Ritter had few details when speaking with The Atlanta Journal Constitution. He said the unidentified suspect struck the officer with what Ritter believed was a handgun that had been used to rob the bank. JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM

Witnesses told police that a suspected robber had fled from a Wells Fargo Bank near Lawrenceville and an officer tracked the suspect to Bethesda United Methodist Church, 444 Bethesda Church Road, said Cpl. Ed Ritter Gwinnett police spokesman. JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM

Officers responded to the bank at 3065 Lawrenceville Highway just after the robbery occurred. The suspected robber apparently died at the scene and the officer received an undisclosed injury and was transported to the hospital, said Cpl. Ed Ritter, Gwinnett police spokesman.
