Personal Journeys: Streetwise and camera ready

Photos: From Perry Homes to 'Walking Dead,' Robert 'IronE' Singleton forges his own path to success. AJC staff writer Bill Torpy chronicles his inspiring story.

Robert "IronE" Singleton and his wife, Commaleta Singleton, walk the grounds of Perry Homes, an Atlanta public housing complex that was torn down in the 1990s.

The actor, who played T-Dog for three seasons on "The Walking Dead," grew up in the crime-ridden neighborhood.

Singleton's mother, Cat, stands in front of their graffiti-covered apartment at Perry Homes a couple of months before her death.

Singleton's uncle, Larry Singleton, taught his nephew how to survive in "scary" Perry Homes.

Singleton with his grandmother, Ethelrine Singleton, known as "Momzie," who raised him. As many as 11 family members shared their living quarters.

Singleton and his wife, Commaleta, cook dinner in the home they share with their three children, Heavven, Nevveah and Ethereal. In between acting jobs, Singleton says he's a suburban soccer dad and chauffeur for his kids.

T-Dog, Singleton's character on "The Walking Dead," met a bloody end in the third season of the AMC series, which is filmed in and around Atlanta.
