A driver faces vehicular homicide and DUI charges in connection with a crash that left a pedestrian dead and multiple cars damaged early Sunday in Buckhead, authorities said.

The fatal wreck happened just before 1:30 a.m. on Peachtree Road and Mathieson Drive.

According to Atlanta police, Gabriel Zamora, 30, lost control of a 2010 Cadillac as he drove north on Peachtree Road “at a high rate of speed" and hit the back of a 2016 Jeep Wrangler. The impact sent both vehicles off the roadway, department spokeswoman Marla Rooker said. The Jeep went into a parking lot and struck three cars. The Cadillac hit the pedestrian, overturned and damaged two other cars.

The pedestrian, who was standing on the sidewalk at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital, Rooker said. His name has not been released.

Zamora also was taken to Grady before he was transferred to the Fulton County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide, DUI, failure to maintain lane and open container violation.

The five damaged vehicles were not occupied. Those inside the Jeep were not seriously injured.

Atlanta police said the crash was not the result of street racing as was widely suggested on social media.
