Cobb, Robert

COBB, Robert "Allan"
Robert "Allan" Cobb, age 78, died October 4 in Duke University Hospital from complications of a broken hip and advanced bladder cancer. Allan was a highly articulate and careful thinker, reader, and planner; strong minded, but possessed of an engaging sense of humor that surfaced unexpectedly and delightfully in the midst of sober discussion. He was a lover of Baroque music which he played constantly as he worked. For the past 15 months he and his wife have been residents in a Raleigh retirement community, but he was born in Atlanta, Georgia where he attended Murphy High School and Emory University before moving to Canada where he obtained his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Toronto. He taught philosophy and logic at York University, Canada for 15 years but migrated to Information Technology for the university, and finally moving back to Atlanta, was an Information Architect in the corporate financial sector. At his death he was working on a book about the financial crisis of 2008. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Cathron Hilburn; his sister Stacy Meier of Atlanta and her family; brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Hilburn of Maryland; sister-in-law Elaine Walizer of Mississippi; and their families. Cremation was performed at the Cremation Society of the Carolinas; and a celebration of his life is to be announced in the coming weeks.
