The northwest corner of the state, including Cherokee, Bartow and Paulding counties in metro Atlanta, were under a severe thunderstorms watch Sunday night.

The watch, issued by the National Weather Service for 16 Georgia counties, was in effect through midnight.

The Weather Service said the primary hazards from any overnight storms would be gusty winds, periods of heavy rain and lightning.

At 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Weather Service radar showed a line of strong storms stretching west to east across northern Alabama, moving to the southeast.

The leading edge of the storms was just beginning to push into the northwest corner of Georgia north of Rome at 8:30.
