A 7-year-old North Carolina girl died Tuesday after she and her mother were viciously attacked by two pit bulls they were helping care for while neighbors were out of town, reports said.

Police said they don’t know why the dogs attacked the pair in the back yard of the neighbors’ home on Roan Drive in Garner, just south of Raleigh.

The names of the victims were withheld, and the mother remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The two were rushed by ambulance to WakeMed hospital, where doctors were unable to save the severely injured girl.

Wake County Animal Control seized the animals and took them to the Wake County Animal Shelter. There was no word on when or if the dogs would be put down.

“This is a horrible tragedy for all involved,” said Garner Police Department Lt. Michael McIver in a Facebook post. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to both families and all those who responded.”
