Officials say it is safe for residents of a Newnan neighborhood to return to their homes after a broken gas line prompted evacuations Sunday morning.

In a Facebook post, the city government said the gas main break near Calhoun and Robinson streets has been repaired.

The city had urged residents to evacuate their homes due to the gas main break just after 8:30 a.m. In a statement, Atlanta Gas Light said a group of contractors in the area cut the gas line while working on a project.

Newnan officials declared the area safe just before 12:30 p.m.

The incident comes as authorities in Coweta County are still working to clean up damage caused by an EF4 tornado.

One person was killed during the tornado, which brought winds as fast as 170 mph through Coweta. The city of Newnan, including the historic district and Newnan High School area, was hit especially hard.
