Shanice Martin, 24, was charged with assault, abandonment, child endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon, the television station reported.

According to police, Martin allegedly attacked her 6-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter in the Bronx. She left the area, and witnesses flagged down police to get help for the children, WABC reported.

Martin later appeared covered in blood at police headquarters and surrendered to police, WNBC reported. She was taken to an area hospital for evaluation, the television station reported.

"She was a good mom, but I guess she was going through something," Martin's brother, Travis Lango, told WABC. "That's not something that you do to your kids. I don't care what's going on with you, you can ask for help. She just took it upon herself to do what she wanted to do, and it's not good."

The children are in stable condition, WNBC reported.
