A 7-year-old girl from India was found dead in the Arizona desert near the Mexican border Thursday, KNXV reported.
Officials with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the child, who was found near Lukeville, was traveling with four others who were dropped off by human smugglers, the television station reported.
Two women from India told Border Patrol officials Wednesday they came to the United States with another woman and two children, but became separated, KNXV reported.
The two women were taken into custody, and officials began searching for the others, the television stations reported. They found the child's body 17 miles west of Lukeville, KNXV reported.
Thursday, a woman believed to be traveling with the deceased child turned herself in, along with an 8-year-old girl, the Arizona Daily Star reported. The women surrendered after crossing back into Arizona from Mexico, the newspaper reported.
The pair was transported to a hospital for treatment for dehydration, KNXV reported.
