Imagine answering a knock at your front door in the middle of the day only to discover your 4-year-old daughter standing there alone, when she should have been at school.
That's exactly what happened to a shocked Houston woman Tuesday. Ashley Palms had last seen her daughter, Alyssa, that morning when she dropped her off at Law Elementary School in South Acres, according to KHOU-TV.
Palms told KHOU no one at the school noticed her daughter wasn't there.
“I realized my daughter had walked out of the school and no one even knew she was missing,” Palms said.
“It just could have (gone) so wrong.”
Palms talked to the child and returned to the school to find out what happened. After watching a surveillance tape, she figured out what went wrong, she told the news station.
“(The kids in the class) went to the bathroom, and when they came out of the bathroom, everybody was gone out of the hallway,” Palms said.
“And (the girl) didn’t know where to go, didn’t know how to get back to the classroom, didn’t see anybody,” she said.
So, the little girl started pushing on doors and was able to walk right out of the school.
She normally walks home from school with her older brother and apparently remembered the way there.
The Houston Independent School District is investigating the incident.
