A 1-year-old girl died Tuesday after she was run over by her mother in what police are calling a “tragic accident,” according to multiple reports.
Louisville Metro police were called around 5:15 p.m. to respond to a report of a child struck by a vehicle at a home on the 6100 block of Ashby Lane, WHAS reported.
Authorities determined that a woman left her two young children, one 18 months old and the other 3, inside the house while she moved the car, police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley told WDRB. The woman told authorities that when she backed the car up she heard a scream, according to WDRB.
Officials determined that the woman's 18-month-old daughter had wandered from the home to the driveway while the 3-year-old remained inside the house, WAVE reported. The child was taken to Norton Children's Hospital, where she later died, according to the news station.
"I was praying for her to be OK, and when I heard that she didn't make it, my heart dropped," Hallie Heath, who lives near the home where the incident happened, told WDRB. "I'm pretty sure this is just an accident. Like accidents sometimes happen, and, like, I think they're good people, and they're not bad at all."
Smiley told The Courier-Journal that investigators don't expect to file charges against the mother in connection to the case.
