A 14-year-old was shot by a .22-caliber gun to his neck, according to Sarasota News Network.

He was identified as Stephen J. Brumby, according to WWSB.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office released the following statement Monday regarding the ongoing investigation, citing witness statements and video from inside the gun range:

William Brumby was positioned in the last shooting lane where there was a solid wall on his right-hand side. After firing a round, the spent shell casing struck the wall causing it to deflect and fall into the back of Mr. Brumby's shirt. Brumby then used his right hand, which was holding the handgun, in an attempt to remove the casing. While doing so, he inadvertently pointed the firearm directly behind him and accidentally fired. The round struck his 14-year-old son, Stephen.

The teen was taken to a hospital where he later died of his injuries, according to WFLA.

Stephen Brumby was with his father and siblings, a 12-year-old sister his 24-year-old brother, David Brumby.

"No matter how calm you try to stay, there's no way to wipe the images away from your mind of your little brother bleeding out in your arms," David Brumby, Stephen's oldest brother, told WFTS.

The family said the medical examiner told them that the shot that killed Stephen Brumby went up toward the ceiling and ricocheted downward.
