The theft happened Tuesday night at a 7-Eleven store in Longmont, according to KUSA-TV, when the 59-year-old customer fell, triggering a seizure.

As rescue workers tried to save him, the woman left the store with his dog, KUSA reported. The victim later died.

On Wednesday, the town’s Deputy Police Chief Jeff Satur spotted the dog named Sampson on Main Street and was able to recover the animal for the victim’s family.

"We understand this was an emotional reunion," the Longmont Police Department said in a social media post.

"But, kisses all around to the large group of family that came to pick Sampson (Sammy) up. He was thrilled to see them," the department wrote.

It’s unclear why the woman took the dog or who had him when Satur found him.

Police are still searching for the woman and are asking for the public’s help in finding her.
