Another driver stopped to help Leith break out a cracked window and crawl out of the car, bruised, but alive.

That’s when the single mother made the decision that would cost her life.

The New York Post reports with no police on the scene and "despite warnings from the motorists who had assisted her," Brittany crossed the highway to go back to her car to recover personal belongings from the car.

As she reached inside the car she was hit and killed by another passing car.

“She has a 3-year-old daughter who doesn’t have a mother anymore,” said Leith's grandmother, Anna Leith. “She was the best mother in the world. She loved Zoey more than anything,” she added.

Anna Leith said her granddaughter was on her way home from a friend's house when she was killed.

Another crash occurred later when a driver plowed into one of the state police cars on the scene.

The trooper was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

As of now, no charges have been filed but an investigation continues.
