A man was shot early Thursday after police said he tried to break into his ex-girlfriend’s home as her five children slept, according to multiple reports.

Authorities were called to a home in the 2500 block of Ring Place around 5 a.m. after a man, identified as Dante Ruff, tried to kick out an air conditioning unit and break into his ex-girlfriend's home through a front window, WLWT reported.

The woman opened fire on Ruff after he got through the window, striking him in the abdomen, according to WXIX-TV. He was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment, where he was last listed in stable condition, the news station reported.

Police told WCPO the woman previously obtained a protection order against Ruff and that she has a concealed carry license.

"She's pretty on edge, but she's calming down now that we're talking to her a little bit more," Sgt. Andrew Fusselman told WCPO after the shooting.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters told WXIX-TV that authorities do no plan to file charges against the woman.

"Thank goodness she had a concealed carry permit and was able to defend herself and her five children," Deters said, according to WLWT. "It is hard to imagine what might have happened to her or her children if she had not been able to protect herself and her family."

Officials with Deters' office told WXIX-TV that Ruff will be charged with aggravated burglary and violation of a protection order after he's released from the hospital.
