A New Mexico woman encouraged a young boy to steal a package from a porch, surveillance video shows.
The video shows a woman and a boy walking down a street when the child, who is carrying a hatchet, points out the package. The woman looks around and the pair circles back before the little boy runs up to the porch, grabs the package and races off, the video shows.
"Very sad. Troubling. I was raised with respect," homeowner Daniel Perez, whose cameras caught the theft, told KOB. "Hopefully, that little boy can get some help and get on the right path."
The package contained a gift for the Perez’s fiancee. The couple is getting married in a few weeks.
Perez said he found the boy and the woman, who live in the neighborhood. He told KOB he is filing a police report.
Investigators with the Children, Youth and Families Department will likely bring a criminal case for prosecution, Simon Drobik, Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, told KOB.
"What's sad is this kid is growing up around a life of crime," Drobik told KOB.
