Woman born during Hurricane Hugo gives birth during Hurricane Matthew

Oct 15, 2016A South Carolina woman who was born during Hurricane Hugo in September 1989 gave birth during Hurricane Matthew.
MUSC officials reported on their Facebook page that Lestlis Matthews delivered a healthy baby boy on Saturday evening in Charleston.
"After going into labor at home and fighting rising flood waters to get to MUSC, Lestlis arrived safely at MUSC to deliver her new son," hospital officials said.
MUSC officials said that Matthews mentioned she was born during Hurricane Hugo, a Category 4 storm that crashed into Charleston around midnight on Sept. 22, 1989, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website. The storm hit Charleston with 140 mph winds and a 20-foot storm surge. Hugo caused $7 billion in damage in the U.S. mainland, making it the costliest hurricane at the time.
Hurricane Matthew officially made landfall just northeast of Charleston on Oct. 8, near McClellanville, South Carolina, as a Category 1 hurricane with 75 mph winds. Charleston received more than 10 inches of rain during Matthew, the NOAA said.
Still, mother and child suffered no complications during the birth.
"Congratulations to the Matthews family and many thanks to our resilient and dedicated staff who helped deliver baby Matthews and 9 other babies during Hurricane Matthew!" MUSC officials wrote on their Facebook page.
