White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be stepping down at the end of June, according to a tweet from President Donald J. Trump.
Sanders has been the public face of the administration in the daily news briefings, fending off reporters’ pointed questions and presenting a calm face during intense questioning over tumultuous issues, scandals and steady staff turnover in the Trump White House. She’s spent countless intense hours now behind the briefing room podium in the glare of an international spotlight, remaining stoic and calm while repeatedly explaining and defending her boss and his remarks, many of them on Twitter, to persistent journalists.
Special counsel Robert Mueller’s revealed that Sanders admitted to investigators that she had made an unfounded claim that “countless” FBI agents had reached out to express support for Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.
Sanders is the third woman to hold the job of White House press secretary. She took to Twitter to thank the president and said she was "blessed and forever grateful" for the opportunity to serve.
A successor has not yet been named.
