Politicians of both parties were quick to react to Speaker of the House Rep. John Boehner's (R-OH) suprise resignation announcement.
The New York Times first reported word of Boehner's decision.
Boehner will leave office at the end of October.
Boehner pointed to interparty fighting over contentious issues like Planned Parenthood funding as one reason why he was stepping down.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Ca.) is seen as a frontrunner to replace Boehner.
