Matt McCracken, a 33-year-old construction worker from Santa Maria, California, was enjoying a day out on the water in his kayak near Santa Barbara on Saturday when a hammerhead shark decided to make him a target for some pestering, NBC News reports.
According to McCracken, the shark was “super aggressive” and began to knock into the back of his kayak. "I couldn't tell if he was biting [the kayak] or if he was head-butting it, but soon as I saw it, I just started going at him with the paddle,” he said.
“(The shark) followed me all the way into about three feet of water," he said. "Even after I got out of my kayak and made it to the beach, he was sitting right there. ... It was pretty creepy."
The Los Angeles Times reports there is an influx of hammerhead sharks in California because of warmer waters due to El Niño.
