Residents of a Los Angeles neighborhood are sounding off after an animal rescue took a shocking turn.
A cat scampered up a utility pole, but couldn’t manage to get back down. After three days, concerned residents called the city, and a crew from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power arrived on the scene.
The rescue was going along smoothly, with the worker able to grab the cat from the pole and place it in the bucket. As the pair were descending, the worker stopped the bucket about halfway down and held the cat over the bucket. He then tossed the cat. A news reporter estimated the cat fell between 15 and 20 feet. A resident tried to catch the cat in a blanket, but missed.
Neighbors say they had pet carriers on the scene, and were planning on taking the cat to the vet. The neighbors were concerned the cat could be injured. They were shocked that the worker tossed the cat into the air, after taking the time to carefully rescue the animal from the pole.
In his defense, the rescuer says he dropped the cat because it was scratching him.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power released a statement, supporting their employee.
The cat immediately fled the scene.
