Walmart originally gave people smile stickers in 1990, then the graphic became the symbol for its discounts called, "rollbacks." In 2006, the company changed its marketing focus, basically dropping the pre-emoji graphic.

In the near future, smiley faces will be gracing the chain's new marketing campaigns.

The company has been trying to court more shoppers by cleaning up stores and improving customer service, CBS News reported.
