Two girls are safe after they narrowly missed being crushed by a tree that crashed through the roof of their home.
WJZ reported an indoor security camera captured footage of the ceiling collapsing as the tree fell onto the home in Lusby, Maryland.
"It sounded like an earthquake," Ashley Stone, 15, told ABC News Radio. "It's definitely a sound that I think for both of us, we'll never forget."
Inside Edition reported the girls were home from school due to high winds, which may have also caused the tree to fall.
"Everything fell on top of us, between the tree and insulation and the ceiling," Ashley Stone, 14, told ABC News Radio.
The girls could be heard screaming in the video and frantically looking for their family pet, a Chihuahua named Gizmo.
The girls were not seriously injured and Francis Stone is thankful his daughters are OK. The girls' mother, Jennifer Stone, told Inside Edition that Gizmo is still shaken, but otherwise OK.
“After everything and seeing everything, the girls did a great job, they looked out for each other,” said Stone. “They looked out for our other family member too, which was our dog.”
The family credits their stainless steel fridge for stopping the tree from causing more damage.
“If that fridge wasn’t there -- who knows what would have happened,” Ashley said. “The situation could’ve been completely different.”
The home was badly damaged and the family is staying in a hotel.
