New surveillance video shows a female driver get out of a white SUV and carrying what looks like a laundry hamper up to the employee entrance, Debbie Posey, practice manager at the Animal Medical Center in Miamisburg, Ohio, said Friday morning.
Inside was a mother cat and three kittens, estimated at 10 weeks old.
“But we can’t bring unknown animals into the hospital,” Posey said. “It could be feral, attack the staff, carry diseases.”
Posey said about twice each year that someone will abandon animals outside the facility. She said the public should not abandon animals outside veterinarian offices, but rather contact the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and Animal Resource Center of Montgomery County.
“So sad and disappointing,” Posey said in an email. “The public should be aware that when someone drops an unknown animal at a veterinary facility, the facility usually does not provide care for the animal because the animal could pose a danger to employees or other pets that are in the care of the facility.”
An animal control officer with Montgomery County picked up the kittens and they will be held at the Animal Resource Center, said Director Mark Kumpf. He said they will try to determine who the cats belong to, and in the meantime the cats will be evaluated by medical staff.
He said if no one claims the cats, they could be adopted.
“The suspect is a white female in a white Chevrolet Suburban or an older SUV,” Kumpf said.
He said the license plate number couldn’t be read, so the video will be sent to Dayton police to see if it can be enhanced.
“Abandonment is a criminal violation,” Kumpf said.
“The attempted transfer of responsibility of an animal via a ‘drop off’ on a facility’s doorstep is actually a cruel act,” Posey said in an email.
