Artur Samarin went by the name "Asher Potts" and posed as an 18-year-old Harrisburg High School student in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Samarin remained in the country and took on a false identity after his visa expired, according to police.

Samarin was active in the school as an ROTC member and a Naval Sea Cadet. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and worked with a student advisory group at a local food bank.

WHTM reported that Samarin has been photographed on Twitter in 2014 posing with a state representative for his achievements.

Sgt. Terry Wealand said police got a tip about Samarin two months ago. He believes Samarin lived with people he became friends with. There is an investigation to determine if others help Samarin conceal his identity.

"I would think there would have to be someone who knew," Wealand said. "And if there is, they are going to pay, too."

Harrisburg School District spokesperson Kirsten Keys said the school is investigating the matter and are working with authorities.

In addition to identity theft, Samarin is facing a tampering with public records charge.
