Twin brothers who invested $11 million from a settlement with Facebook became Bitcoin billionaires when the cryptocurrency topped $11,000 a coin recently, according to The Verge.

Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, who attended Harvard with Mark Zuckerberg, won a $65 million settlement over the idea for Facebook and put some of the money in the online currency in 2013.

"If Bitcoin is a better gold or seen as a type of gold-like asset, then it could be in the trillions on a market cap," Tyler told CNN Money in 2015. "We do feel those are very real possibilities."

The coins started the year trading around $800 and were more than $11,000 Monday.

"If you like gold, there are many reasons you should like Bitcoin,” Cameron said.
