Hours after Michael Cohen described President Donald Trump as a "con man" and "racist" while testifying before the House Oversight Committee, Trump slammed his former personal attorney Thursday at a news conference in Vietnam.
Trump, talking to reporters after his Hanoi summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un ended early with no denuclearization deal, first blasted the timing of Cohen's hearing.
"I think having a fake hearing like that, and having it in the middle of this very important summit, is really a terrible thing," Trump said. "They could have made it two days later or next week, and it would've been even better; they would've had a lot more time. But having it during this very important summit is sort of incredible."
Trump claimed that Cohen's comments were mostly false – except for one.
"He lied a lot, but it was very interesting because he didn't lie about one thing: He said no collusion with the Russian hoax," Trump said. "And I said, 'I wonder why he didn't just lie about that, too, like he did about everything else?'"
Trump added that the Russia investigation "is so bad for our country" and "should never happen to another president."
"We'll see what happens, but it was pretty shameful, I think," Trump said.
On Wednesday, Cohen said he does not have "direct evidence" that Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia.
"But I have my suspicions," Cohen said.
He said he believes Trump knew that members of his campaign, including Donald Trump Jr., met with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower in June 2016. He also claimed that Trump knew his associate, Roger Stone, had spoken to WikiLeaks' Julian Assange about a dump of Democratic National Committee emails in July 2016.
