The search continued most of Wednesday for three men, police believed gunned down an Illinois police officer Tuesday morning.
As local, state and federal law enforcement officials arrived for the manhunt north of Chicago, a community continued to mourn the life of the officer.
1. Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was shot and killed Tuesday after he radioed to dispatch that he was chasing three men on foot in the community of Fox Lake, Illinois. His backup found Gliniewicz with a gunshot wound. He died shortly after on scene. Gliniewicz, 52, was on the force for more 30 years, married, the father of four sons and known as "G.I. Joe," CNN reported.
2. Gliniewicz's death is the third life lost by law enforcement in the line of duty this year in Illinois, The Associated Press reported. Dozens of supporters gathered in Fox Lake Tuesday night. Many held signs of support of police, some reading "Police Lives Matter" or "Blue and Brave."
3. Tuesday's manhunt put at least four schools on lockdown and had residents confined to their homes. Police searched woods and marshy areas in the region that is about 60 miles north of Chicago. Law enforcement also went house to house looking for the unknown suspects, CNN reported. Commuter trains were stopped. And in an unusual twist, for people with dogs who needed to go outside, police officers handled the job of walking the pets as residents stayed indoors, the AP reported.
4. Schools remained closed Wednesday as members of law enforcement continued the search, The Washington Post reported.
5. Gliniewicz was supposed to retire next month, but the chief asked him to stay on for one more month, WGN reported.
