Ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft are teaming up to provide free rides to veterans who need to get to jobs and interviews.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates out of the 49,000 homeless veterans in the country, about 32 percent of them live in rural areas where reliable transportation can be scarce. That makes it tough for them to get to services and job interviews that could help them get back on track.
The first and second lady's Joining Forces program announced, Tuesday, that Uber and Lyft have stepped up to donate the free rides. Uber is donating 10,000 rides to five organizations affiliated with the Department of Labor's Homeless Veterans' Reintegration Program. A spokesperson for Lyft said that company is donating "thousands of rides" as well.
Uber users can also pitch in to help. On Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, users may donate $5 towards a ride for a veteran within the app.
