A Southern California man was convicted of first-degree murder Wednesday for killing and dismembering his neighbor and shooting another woman, a jury found.
A jury will soon decide whether Daniel Wozniak, 31, receives the death penalty or life in prison, according to The Associated Press.
Wozniak was facing eviction, about to get married and desperately needed money when he devised a plan to kill his neighbor, Samuel Herr, and steal $50,000 the Army veteran had saved from his time in the service, prosecutors said.
Wozniak shot Herr in the attic of the Los Alamitos theater then played the lead in a musical a night after the murder, according to the AP report. He later dismembered Herr's body and dumped the remains in a park.
Wozniak then texted Herr's friend, 23-year-old Julie Kibuishi, asking her to Herr's apartment so he could kill her and "make it appear that Herr raped and killed her before fleeing," the report said.
Wozniak asked a teenager to withdraw money from the victim's bank account.
The actor was arrested days later at his bachelor party.
Wozniak confessed to the double murder in a police interview, which jurors saw.
His motive was "money and insanity," he said.
Wozniak's lawyers were unsuccessful in getting the death penalty option removed.
