A Texas man accused of robbing a bank Friday allegedly told deputies he needed the money to pay for his fiancée's wedding ring and the ceremony site the next day, authorities said.
Heath Edward Bumpous, 36, of Crockett, was charged with aggravated robbery after the theft at Citizens State Bank in Groveton, according to the Trinity County Sheriff's Office.
"He basically stated that he was getting married tomorrow so he didn't have enough money for a wedding ring that he wanted to buy and he needed to pay for the wedding venue," Sheriff Woody Wallace told KTRE.
Wallace said Bumpous, who gave a full confession to police, demanded money from the bank teller and said he had a weapon, NBC News reported.
Officials from the Trinity County Sheriff's Office posted images of Bumpous on their Facebook page after the robbery, and his fiancée saw the photos and recognized her husband-to-be, KTRE reported.
"His fiancée ... was able to get in touch with him on the phone when she saw our post on Facebook," Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace said on Facebook. "She knew it was him, she contacted him and asked him if he had robbed the bank."
Bumpous followed his fiance's advice and turned himself in at the Houston County Courthouse, Wallace said on Facebook. The sheriff says that most of the money was recovered.
Bumpous was still in police custody Monday morning and has just been transferred to Trinity County Jail. Wallace told NBC News the wedding did not happen.
"No wedding took place that I know of," Wallace told NBC News, "It didn't happen in my jail."
