A 13-year-old New York girl was struck and killed Sunday afternoon as she tried to retrieve a cellphone that she dropped onto subway tracks.

Dina Kadribasic, 13, of Queens, jumped onto the tracks at the 63rd Drive-Rego Park subway station, about two blocks from her home, the New York Daily News reported. An inbound train struck her as she tried to climb back onto the subway platform.

The Daily News reported that the train conductor saw Kadribasic on the tracks, but could not stop the train in time to avoid hitting her.

Kadribasic was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital Center.

Video posted to Twitter shortly after the fatal crash showed bystanders milling around as first responders made their way into the subway station.

The R train’s southbound platform was shut down for much of the night as police investigators worked the scene. Transit authorities warned commuters to allow additional travel time due to the delays caused by the shutdown.
