A Gastonia teen was riding a horse Saturday when she was thrown off and kicked in the head.
Destiny Stafford, 15, was riding her dad’s horse at her aunt’s house in Gastonia when the accident happened.
The Stuart Cramer High student was airlifted to Levine Children's Hospital and is in critical condition, according to a family friend, Ashley Cloninger.
Stafford is on life support and does not show signs of brain activity. Doctors intend to remove her from life support to see if she can breathe on her own.
Stafford is a rising 10th-grader and is the captain of the junior varsity cheerleading team.
Organizers have planned a prayer vigil Sunday at Stuart Cramer High School at 7 p.m. and have asked attendees to wear purple.
Friends have created the hashtag #DestinyStrong to support Stafford and her family.
