Smith said a 13-year-old girl reported a shark bit her and her boogie board. Smith said the teen suffered a few lacerations on her foot but was not severely injured.

The mayor said there are beach patrols monitoring the area.

“She wobbled out and left the boogie board and (the shark) just went at the boogie,” witness Alexa Whittemore told WWAY. “I felt like I needed to warn people but it was surreal. Like it was definitely surreal, and I was like, 'Oh, my gosh, I just hope she has her legs,' like I felt so bad for her cause she was so young.”

A caller told 911, “It got a hold of her foot and bit her board in half.”

The shark was reported to be about 4 feet long.
