Ship investigators reviewed camera footage and confirmed that Smook had gone overboard hours earlier.
The cruise ship was on its way to the Bahamas but turned around to join another cruise ship and Coast guard personnel in the search for Smook.
The Coast Guard covered more than 6,500 square miles in its search over the three-day period, according to Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios, a Coast Guard 7th District spokesman.
Smook would have graduated this spring with a degree in mining engineering, according to his family. They said he had just accepted a job offer and was looking forward to the future.
