Tapwrit, with a late burst of energy, won the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes Saturday.
Irish War Cry, an early favorite, led most of the race; however, was not able to pull off the victory for the final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown series.
The field was cut to 11 when Epicharis, a 4-1 favorite was scratched from the race earlier Saturday after a veterinarian exam revealed continued inflammation in the colt’s right front hoof.
Epicharis was eligible for a $1 million bonus by the New York Racing Association’s attempt to lure a Japanese horse to compete.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
