Police report the man they said shot and killed a Kentucky state trooper has died, KFVS reported.

Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks was found in a remote area near Interstate 24 In Kentucky Monday morning after an all-night manhunt. He was armed with a handgun, and did not put down the weapon after being told several times to do so by police, Fox News reported.

Officials said the trooper closest to Johnson-Shanks had no choice but to shoot him. Johnson-Shanks was hit multiple times, Fox News reported.

He died at an area hospital.

Sunday's manhunt started after Kentucky state trooper Cameron Ponder pulled over Johnson-Shanks Sunday night.

After talking with Ponder, Johnson-Shanks drove away, beginning a car chase that ended when Ponder hit the back of Johnson-Shanks' car, KFVS reported.

Fox News reported that Johnson-Shanks stopped abruptly causing Ponder to hit the vehicle.

Kentucky State Police said Johnson-Shanks then opened fire, hitting the trooper's car, wounding Ponder multiple times.

WSMV reported Ponder later died at an area hospital.

Police searched for Johnson-Shanks throughout the night.

According to Lyon County Judge Executive Wade White, he was found just before 7:30 a.m. local time, KFVS reported.

Johnson-Shanks is from the Florissant, Missouri area, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

It is a neighboring community to Ferguson, Missouri.

Ponder had been on the job for less than a year, having recently graduated from the state police training academy, taking a position with the Kentucky State Police in January.
