Controversial music mogul Suge Knight was shot multiple times early Sunday morning outside Chris Brown's pre-Video Music Awards party.

TMZ was there shortly after the shooting and broke the news. The site interviewed multiple celebrities at the party who say they heard about four shots around 1:30 a.m. Knight was seen walking out of the club and into a police cruiser, where he waited for an ambulance.

Knight was reportedly taken into surgery and then to the ICU at about 6 a.m. Sunday.

Reports are differing on how many times Knight was shot but TMZ reportedly talked to family members who confirmed he was shot six times.

Multiple outlets report rapper The Game was denied entry into the party after an altercation with a bouncer. He left, but reports say his entourage stayed behind. It's unclear whether or not that's related to the shooting.

Citing a witness, Hollywood Life reports Chris Brown may have been the intended target. The outlet reports three others were shot including Knight.

Brown, who is a VMA nominee, addressed the incident on Twitter later Sunday morning, saying, "It's disappointing that we as a society can't have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes."

Knight is the former CEO of Death Row Records which represented artist like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Tupac throughout the 90s.

MTV notes he was known to "run the label with an iron fist." Noting, "The still unsolved shooting death in 1996 of Shakur helped fuel a violent East Coast/West Coast feud that pitted Death Row and Sean 'Diddy' Combs' Bad Boy Records against the other."

In more recent years the 49-year-old has been known for his legal issues.

Knight is expected to recover from the shooting. The MTV Video Music Awards are scheduled to air Sunday night.
