Students at the University of Mississippi have spoken: they wanted the state flag removed from campus. School officials agreed and removed the flag, which included the Confederate battle flag, from the campus.

Campus police officers lowered and folded the state flag during a ceremony Monday morning, WMC reported.

The university’s interim chancellor, Morris Stocks, said in a statement:

“I understand the flag represents tradition and honor to some. But to others, the flag means that some members of the Ole Miss family are not welcomed or valued. That is why the university faculty, staff and leadership have united behind this student-lead initiative.”

The flag will be preserved in the school's archives along with the resolutions calling for the removal, WMC reported.

Student senators voted 33-15, with one abstention, to ask the school's administration to remove the flag, CNN reported.
