A family’s feline used one of its nine lives to save the life of a sleeping 3-year-old.

A stray bullet pierced a window, went into a couch and then Opie, the Sipe family's cat, Thursday morning, according to WPMT.

"It took me a second to realize what just happened," Angelica Sipe said to WPMT. "The first thing I did was check on my son and he was sound asleep. Then I saw my cat on the floor and that's when I realized my cat was shot."

The bullet entered Opie's head, out his neck, back into his shoulder and out under his armpit rib, according to WPMT.

"It could have been my son," Sipe said.

As bad as that sounds though, Opie only suffered damage to some of his muscles. He was treated at an emergency vet clinic and is expected to recover. Opie's vet bills have topped $1,000. Sipe has created a GoFundMe page to help pay for Opie's recovery costs. It has raised more than $2,000 as of Tuesday.

"I am thankful for my cat and am in any way possible going to make sure he comes back home where he belongs," Sipa wrote on the GoFundMe page. "He is my hero."
