State officials are investigating an Ohio day care where an infant girl recently died, and said negligence may be to blame for the child’s death.
The baby, 2-month-old Di'Yanni Griffin, died June 18 while under the care of Nana's Home Daycare in Cleveland, Cleveland.com reported. Inspectors with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services ruled that negligence contributed to the girl's death.
The Cuyahoga County medical examiner hasn’t yet ruled on the baby’s cause of death.
Di'Yanni's mother, Taylor Bush, told Cleveland.com she dropped Di'Yanni and her three sons off at the day care on Jun 18. Bush said she returned later in the day to take the baby to a doctor's appointment and noticed "something wrong" with her, Cleveland.com reported. Bush called 911.
Danielle Townsend, the owner of the day care, told WEWS-TV that her sister was working at the day care alone that day. Townsend said her sister noticed Di'Yanni was "breathing fast," and said she tried calling Bush but wasn't able to reach her.
“The baby was breathing when she gave Taylor Bush the baby,” Townsend said. “The baby was never dead. The baby was never cold. She was breathing fast.”
Bush told Cleveland.com that no one from the day care alerted her about Di’Yanni’s condition.
Ambulance workers performed CPR on the baby, but she died at a hospital. Bush told Cleveland.com that a doctor said Di’Yanni had likely stopped breathing earlier in the day.
State inspectors cited the day care for four violations after Di’Yanni’s death, which included not keeping records that the baby was enrolled there and not reporting “the incident that resulted in the death of a child,” WEWS-TV reported.
State and county workers will determine what will happen to the day care’s license to operate.
“If my day care was unfit, my day care would have been closed,” Townsend told WEWS-TV. “My day care is not closed.”
