Three people were stabbed Thursday during a Fourth of July fireworks show in Chicago, and 14 others were injured after being trampled while trying to leave the area, police said.
According to a Chicago Police Department spokesman, officials believe someone yelled "gun" or "shots fired," which caused a "stampede" outside Navy Pier, the Chicago Tribune reported. There was no evidence of shots fired or anyone being shot, WLS reported.
According to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, an "altercation" occurred at 10 p.m., and the three people were stabbed, the television station reported. Guglielmi said it was unclear what caused the altercation.
Although people were screened for weapons when they entered the secure area of the pier, the stabbings occurred outside that area, WLS reported.
Rachel Schar, 22, a server at the nearby Harry Caray's Tavern, said she was collecting credit cards from a party table when she heard screaming and was knocked over by people running away from the pier, the Tribune reported.
“It was pure chaos,” Schar told the newspaper. “I literally thought I was going to die.”
