A South Florida police sergeant was accidentally shot Wednesday during a training exercise that was not supposed to include ammunition, the Miami Herald reported.
The officer, who was not named but was confirmed as a member of the Doral Police Department, was participating in a firearms exercise when he was shot in the upper torso, the newspaper reported.
Rescue crews responded to the Miami Dade Public Safety Training Institute shortly after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, WSVN reported. The officer was airlifted to an area hospital and was in stable condition, the television station reported.
It was not clear how the accident occurred or who shot the veteran street patrol sergeant, the Herald reported.
"We have more questions than you do,” Doral police spokesman Ray Valdez told the newspaper.
The facility contains a small, enclosed fake town with street and store names that police use during practice for live situations, according to the Herald.
