Frustrated with a lack of information about to get around in Korea, Sgt. 1st Class Ronnie Russell figured he'd make an app for that.
Russell struggled through a deployment to Korea for about 15 years ago. He had difficulty getting around the country because navigational resources weren’t accessible. Russell remembered those difficulties during his new assignment to Korea last year. Russell’s free mobile application helps troops and their families navigate their duty stations and nearby communities.
He told DVIDS "there was nothing being done about it, except through each area's publication, so I didn't like that. So I said let me try making an app. The app was really for my soldiers, because they were new. Korea was not new to me."
Russell tried to get the app developed but that didn’t work out so well. He decided to figure it out on his own, with the help of some Google searches.
“I was like, ‘Well, I’ll teach myself,' so I went on Google,” he said. “I tell people now, ‘I went to Google University, and my professor’s name was YouTube.’ That is who taught me.”
Russell’s app, Penn Around, is full of resources for soldiers assigned to duty in Korea. It contains bus schedules, taxi information, and military lodging information.
So far, the app has been downloaded more than 5,000 times.
