A West African player on a Pennsylvania high school soccer team was allegedly taunted by opposing players with chants of “Ebola!” during a game last week.
The Allentown Morning Call newspaper reports it received two letters from fans who attended the game last Thursday and alleged that racist remarks were hurled by Northampton High School players at a black player for Nazareth High School.
The paper contacted Edward Bachert, the legal guardian for the 16-year-old player from Guinea. Bachert said players for Nazareth told him that in addition to the Ebola comments, Northampton players directed racial slurs at the teen.
Officials for both schools are investigating the claims, the Morning Call reports.
The paper reports that the teen came to the U.S. with siblings about three years ago. Bachert’s family took in the teen two years ago and said the boy constantly worries about his parents who still live in Guinea, one of the West African countries hardest hit by the Ebola crisis.
According to the Morning Call, the teen was ejected in the game’s final minutes after charging at a Northampton player. Bachert told the paper the teen was distressed by the taunting and cried at the kitchen table when he got home.
"He was upset on the field, he was upset when I saw him after the game, he was upset when he came home," Bachert told the Morning Call.
The paper reports some Nazareth players vented on social media following the game.
