A self-described "simple man" plunked down $9 million to ensure a specialty license plate for one of his six Rolls Royce cars.

Balwinder Sahani spent the money for license plate "D5" at Dubai's Road and Transport Authority auction earlier in October, according to Bloomberg Pursuits.

A low number license plate is seen as a status symbol in the United Arab Emirates, according to Bloomberg.

Sahani, an Indian businessman who owns a property management company, has received attention for the purchase. Some people stop and ask to take a picture with him, others tell him how he wasted his money.

"It's hard, people giving comments without knowing the type of person I am," Sahani told CNN Money.

Sahani also spent about $275,000 on another license plate at the auction, which included 80 plates. He paid $6.8 million for license plate "O9" last year.

But the record for the most spent on a license plate goes to businessman Saeed Al Khouri, who paid about $14 million for a license plate with No. 1.

Still, Sahani has two more Rolls Royce vehicles on order.
